Events

  • August 1970:
VT-22 transitioned to the TA-4J "Skyhawk", a two-seat version of the attack bomber employed by the Navy and Marine Corps in Vietnam.

  • 1970:
As we transitioned from the TF-9J to the TA-4J at Kingsville, VT-21 was the first to transition, then ours, then VT-23 last, then it was on to Beeville until all the advanced jet squadrons were A-4's.
We never had any single seaters, but we did have single seat F-9's which were fun to fly.
Most of ours (TA-4J) came brand new out of the factory in Long Beach, but we took a few from the Marines in Yuma and they were a piece of junk, poorly maintained. Two flamed out and crashed shortly after we took ownership of them. Not nice to have happen in a training squadron
    Captain Mike Porter USN (Retired)

    Frogmen recover students body
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Navy frogmen recovered the body of a student pilot from the bottom of Corpus Christi Bay Friday, more than a week after the crash of a jet trainer.
The body of Ensign Robert J. Crossan, 22, of Landenberg, PA., was found about 40 yards from the wreckage, said Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Mary Cooperman.
"He apparently ejected from the aircraft at low level," she said.
The body of the Instructor, Lt. Cmdr. John A. Kasting, 34, of Kingsville, X, was recovered soon after the crash of the TA-4J aircraft.
A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in the water because a parachute shroud became tangled in its rear rotor.

The engine failed to deliver sufficient power for an immediate takeoff and the plane skittered into the water and sank.
